Cultural Tidbit #2 – Marriage

No One Forgotten

Family lineage is so important in Dinka culture that even if you die, your name will not. A man whose older brother has died, even in infancy, will be called upon to carry on his name. This means that he will have to take a woman as his brother’s wife and have children with her. These children will not be his but his brother’s. The woman will not be his wife but his brother’s. But both the children and wife will be his responsibility to care for. So, even if you do not live to see your 1 month birthday, your children will.
